We know that during the Covid-19 lockdown from March 2020 to September 2021, the world faced unprecedented and crippling challenges. While those who can afford, stayed safely at home, the homeless, street dwellers, daily-wage laborers, and the downtrodden faced unsurmountable hardships. Moved deeply by their plight, Mr. Sagayam initiated a unique feeding scheme and named it after the beloved Tamil saint Vallalar who strived hard to wipe-out the hunger from the world. In May 2020, Mr. Sagayam inaugurated Vallalar Makkal Unavagam in which common people came together and donated whatever little they can to feed the poor and needy. Through this unique feeding program, thousands of hungry people were fed during the lockdown period. Many hundreds queued peacefully in front of our office quietly and received their food. In order to include ordinary people also into this feeding program, Mr. Sagayam initiated a new scheme called “Kaippidi Arisi” in which each household was expected to save one handful of rice every day. Thereafter the collected is picked up by our volunteers every month and nutritious food was prepared and served to the needy. Even after the return of normalcy from Covid-19 lockdown, this unique feeding program is continued till date. The weak and poor laborers receive their lunch packets from our office premises every day. The rice collected from the Kaippidi Arisi has been donated to the inmates of Adyar Cancer Institute, Mercy Oldage home and Girmaldes leprosy hospital. In an effort to provide nutritious food to the beneficiaries, pulses, vegetables and fruits are also donated along with the rice.
Tamil Mutram was launched on 19 September 2019 by Mr. U. Sagayam, IAS (VR), with the vision of nurturing oratory skills in Tamil, one of the world’s classical languages. The programme emphasizes simple, natural Tamil speeches without mixing English or other languages, and has now reached its 375th week with great success. Its broader mission is to unite Tamils worldwide, preserve and promote Tamil land, culture, traditions, and arts, and ignite the Tamil spirit in future generations. The initiative works to encourage everyday use of pure Tamil, highlight its rich antiquity and history, publish research and literary works, and safeguard rare art forms. It also focuses on deciphering ancient inscriptions, reviving traditional skills in architecture, shipbuilding, astronomy, agriculture, and martial arts like Silambattam and Varmakalai, while preserving festivals and games. Through these efforts, Tamil Mutram strives to strengthen Tamil identity and ensure the language and heritage thrive globally.
